Learning to be anti-racist.
At Robert Mellors, our Make a Difference ethos is pinned around a set of values, all of which are supportive of developing children to understand their responsibilities for life in a diverse, multi-cultural society.
Every year, in the Autumn term, each year group participates in a 6-week unit of learning which complements our existing PSHRE curriculum. This learning is called AREP (Anti-Racism Education Programme). All children access learning that progresses from the previous year; knowledge and skills are built on to develop understanding of what racism is and supports them to be ‘anti-racist’.
Our school staff have had training from the author of this scheme of work who works with the Achievement and Equality team in Nottinghamshire and who is now, also, a member of our governing body.
The Anti-Racism learning is age-appropriate and based on different books and resources. The children will be supported to develop their understanding of similarities, differences, bullying and racism.
The overview of learning, including reference to the books that the children will read, is can be found below.. I hope that you will find it useful to look through this so that you have an awareness of the coverage of the lessons.
